| The
best part about practicing Yoga is that it in very handy, no special equipments
or machines, or clothes are required; only a small amount of space, preferably
ventilated, and a strong desire for a healthy and more fulfilled life. Yoga
is a comprehensive and holistic science of life that originated in India
thousands of years ago. It is the oldest system of personal development,
encompassing body, mind and spirit, displaying a profound understanding
of man's essential nature and the need and means to live in harmony with
himself and his environment. The 'physical body' is perceived as a vehicle,
with 'mind' as the driver and 'soul' the true identity of men. 'Action’,
'emotion' and 'intelligence' are the three forces by which the body-vehicle
is moved. For integrated development these forces needs to be in proper
balance. |

Aasans
NThe Yogic postures
(asans) exercise every part of the body, stretching and toning
the muscles and joints, the spine and the entire skeletal system.
The internal organs, glands and nerves are revitalised, keeping
all systems in radiant health. The asans are also liberators
of vast resources of energy by releasing the physical and mental
tensions. The 'Yogic breathing' (Pranayam) rejuvenates the body
and helps in exercising a control over the mind at the same
time bringing calmness and leaving one refreshed. Similarly,
techniques of positive thinking and meditation increases the
clarity of perception, enhances mental power improves concentration
and ultimately leads to a blissful state.
Therapeutic
use of Yoga is widely acknowledged in the healing of various
injuries, cure of physical and mental ailments, providing
sure relief from the tensions and stress of the hectic modern
life. Many people are drawn to Yoga for body fitness and shape
up, some came in search of relief from a specific physical
or mental problem, yet others come impelled by a feeling that
something is lacking in their life, that they are not living
life to its optimum.
Yogic asans would appear, initially to a starter, a series
of strange physical postures which helps to keep the body
lean and flexible, but with regular practice in due course
of time, one comes to the experiencing of the inner subtle
changes. It is followed by the change in approach towards
life and above all the inner peace and glimpse of the inner
self; the 'realisation' which we all are seeking, consciously
or unconsciously, and towards which we all are gradually evolving.

The
History of Yoga |
| The
origins of Yoga are shrouded in the mists of time, it is often thought
to have been revealed to ancient enlightened sages as a divine science
of life. The oldest archaeological evidence of Yoga comes from the
Indus valley civilization which dates around 3000 B.C. The earliest
written mention of yoga occurs in the scriptures called Vedas, but
the main source of yoga is the Upanishads which sublimates the Indian
Vedantic Philosophy. The first and foremost scripture on yoga is the
'Yoga Sutra (3rd century B.C.) of 'Patanjali'. The basic book on the
practice of 'Asans' is the 'Hatha Yoga Pradipika'. |

ageing and premature deterioration of the body are largely due to
our negligence and auto intoxication. The catabolic process of cell
deterioration can be significantly reduced and delayed by keeping
body parts clear (both externally and internally) and well lubricated.
Yoga therapy improves the functioning of the major systems such as
(a) Nervous system (b) Digestive system (c) Reproductive system (d)
Endocrine system (e) Immune system.
The power peg techniques of breathing exercises (Pranayama) provides

diseases
An
effective and regular practice under supervision for about 6 months
would demonstrate the following results.
Reduction
of body weight (both weight loss and inch loss).
A
significant increase in stamina and lung capacity.
Decrease
in blood sugar level.
Decrease
in cholesterol level.

| M.M.S.
Institute of Yoga Therapy |
| The
M.M.S. Institute of Yoga therapy comprises of a team of highly qualified
professionals with varied and diverse expertise and experience. We
have medical professionals, psychologists, highly trained Yoga masters
and demonstrators, experts in Ayurveda, dieticians, programmers etc.
The M.M.S. Institute has effectively blended the ancient yogic art
with the needs of modern life, focusing and researching on the demands
of a hectic life, to cope up with work pressure, emotional needs
and familial pressures and other various aspects of contemporary
life. The schedule for the course is broken up into the following
heads. |
| |
| Relaxation
|
| The
therapy works on the principle of mutuality, if the body is relaxed
and the muscles unstrained, the mind will also calm down. Similarly
if the mind is in anxiety the impact would travel down to the body
also. The tensions not only make us uncomfortable but they drain away
our energy resources as well. This results in tiredness and ill health.
Relaxation entails three parts-
physical, mental and spiritual. One of the basic technique in the
'Shava Asana' (the corpse pose) where one lies down and first tense
up the muscles, isolating them, and then release them aided by visualization
and autosuggestions. By autosuggestions, mastery is achieved over
involuntary muscles through the subconscious mind. Deep seated tensions
and related fears, stored experiences or memories of emotional misadventures
and other deep rooted concerns in the sub-conscious and unconscious
mind which keep inflicting pair and ill health to the body and disquietude
to the mind, are all diffused out. The course can be branched out
into specific disciplines: -
Parental
and family related problems
Job
stress and career anxiety
Problems
related to eating disorders
Addictions
Problems
and fears linked to and arousing from sex-life.
General
depression.
Fear
of specific things.
Anger
management
Grief
management
Problems
related to identity crisis.
M.M.S. Deals with these issues in
a three stage directed programme i.e. identification, case history
and final treatment.

| Yoga
Psychology |
| Central
to the knowledge of the causative reasons of aliments and disorders
is the psychology of the pain, the intricacies of the working of mind,
'non observances' of the 'niyamas' and 'Yamas' (restraints). The session
besides exploring the deep down psychological dimensions would isolate
and relate individual problem to a pattern of causative factors and
the distracting symptoms. Working on the principle of preventive measures
would ensures that such disorders do not occur in future through a
conditioning of the mind and emotion. |
| |
| Human
Anatomy, Pathology and Ayurveda |
| The
session encloses a detailed and minute review of the human Anatomy
and physiology, from the yogic point of view, by a team of trained
medical professionals and yoga masters. The session entails a description
of the common pathologies of the body: arteriosclerosis, obesity,
osteoarthritis etc. Such yogic concepts of anatomy and physiology
as; agni, dhatus, ojas, pitta tri-dosha theory, vayu etc, and their
relationship to health and illness are vividly explained. The diagnosis
based on the examination of pulse and tongue, the ayurvedic constitution
and imbalances, the medical science of 'Vikaars' and 'doshas' and
all other elementary knowledge of Ayurveda would be provided. |
| |
| Categorisation
and Adjustments for Asana Therapy |
| A
categorisation and detailed account and record of the body nomenclature
is done on the basic of muscular, neuro-muscular and skeletal patterns
and 'doshas' and 'vayus'. Demonstration of specific misalignments
through the aide of volunteers would be made and proper 'asans' (postures)
and movements for their restoration would be displayed. The right
performance of the 'asans'-slowly and meditatively, and the breathing
process during the performance would be elaborated upon in minute
details. The purification of 'naddis' (nerve channels) for the free
flow of 'prana' (life force) would be dealt with in theory as well
as through demonstrations. No book can be a substitute to the feedback
of a teacher, the display and performance under guidance remain vital
to the Yoga practice. |
| |
| Diet
and fasting |
| Food
has a subtle effect on our mind besides the direct impact which it
imparts to the body. In fact the right 'sattvic' diet is the fuel
on which the body vehicle would run smoothly with the aid of yoga.
The reasons behind yogic diet and right eating methods and food combinations
would be discussed in detail. The anatomical reasons for vegetarian
diet as being more suitable for humans, and other alike facts would
be discussed is detail. The division of food on the basic of the three
'gunas'- Sattva (purity); Rajas (activity, passion) and 'Tamas' (darkness,
inertia). The attributes of these qualities would be transmitted according
to the ‘guna’ of the food. Various devices for the avoidance
of unhealthy food and change over of diet patterns and eating habits
would be provided.
Fasting
is a means of cleansing the body of toxins and thereby rejuvenating
it. It is a natural way of the body to deal with illness and disorders,
as animals stop eating until they recover from illness. Fasting
saves much energy which otherwise in utilized is digestion and which
can be used for self-healing and spiritual development. The MMS
course will distinguish between fasting and dieting, the proper
ways of fasting depending upon the individual's capacity and requirement,
the does and don't do's during fast, how to break a fast etc. The
gains of a fast are tremendous and one would be surprised to see
them after the completion of a successful fast under proper guidance.

| Meditation |
| Perhaps
the remedy for almost the ailments and disorders whether mental, physical,
emotional on spiritual lie in the act of meditation. This wonderful
device of controlling the mind, the flow of emotions and thought process
frees the mind of all tensions, stresses and anxieties to provide
quietude and calm.
The MMS course caters to the need
of an individual for the right selection of the meditation technique
which would suit his temperament and personality and help him to
achieve maximum benefits. It is basically a doctrine of the 'art
of living' in the real sense by a disassociation from the artificiality
of the external objects; from falsely living in either the past
or in anticipation of the unknown future.
Certain basic principles are laid
down for the general course of meditation to assist and supplement
the practice as the right choice of place, direction, environment,
etc.
Separate devices are doctored in
consideration of the level of the practitioner, the level is assessed
by experts based on the experiences of the practitioner.
