What is Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a therapy of treating disorders by body massage or in hailing essential oils which would stimulate the brain inducing a consequent reaction or by getting absorbed by the lungs would provide physical and psychological benefits.

Fragrance oils are many a times erroneously passed as Essential oils, in actuality they are altogether different from Essential oils. Essential oils are naturally occurring extract, the pure essence of volatile plants, usually having the characteristic odour or flavour of the plant from which it is extracted. Fragrance oils or perfume oils are made up of unnatural chemicals and are generally synthetic in constitution. These oils do not have the natural qualities of essential oils nor do they provide the therapeutic benefits. Therefore one must be very careful regarding the ingredient list of a product before buying.

Essential oils are never applied to the skin in their undiluted stage, as they are very powerful and concentrated they need to be diluted with pure vegetable oils (carrier oils).

Essential oils can be used singularly but when they are blended with in a composition constituting more than one essential oil the therapeutic impact is much enhanced and offers a varied application and results, moreover, the aroma as the result of the blend would be of a finer and newer characteristic.

History of Aromatherapy
The ancient Chinese culture is generally believed to be the first culture indoctrinated with the use of aromatic plant. Burning of incense was a common practice among them to restore harmony and balance.

It was form the Chinese that the knowledge passed down to the Egyptians, Persians and the Indians, however, an indigenous fore knowledge of the aromatic qualities of plants cannot be ruled out but there is no authentic information in this regard. The Egyptian mummies were made by embalming the dead bodies with the impact of preservative values of the oils of clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cedarwood and myrrh The ancient civilization used perfumed oils for the purpose of fragrance and in cosmetics, but at the same time they were aware of the medicinal and the therapeutic benefits of these oils which they frequently used. On occasions the oils and fragrant herbs were used in many religious ceremonies and in the practice of occult and magic; to please the deities and even for spiritual benefits as well. The Greeks perhaps acquired their knowledge of aromatic herbs from the Egyptians but they attributed this knowledge as descending down from their gods. Even if this assertion does not seem plausible it indicates the high esteem which the Greeks imparted to there aromatic herbs and their medicinal values.

The Indian use of aromatic knowledge goes back to Indus Valley civilization of around 2500 B.C. The archaeological evidences indicate the burning of incense at the Harrappan sites of Kalibangan and Lothal is front of idols. The Vedic literature is rich with references to aromatic qualities of plants and their uses for cosmetic, medicinal, ritualistic and spiritual purposes. The Ayurveda is rich with the knowledge of medicinal values and preparation of extracts from a wide range of plants. It seems that preparation of extracts from plants by means of distillation was also known to the Indians.

The knowledge of aromatic qualities of plant passed down from the Egyptians and the Greeks to the Romans. The invention of the 'coiled cooling pipe' in the 11th century was a revolutionary event as it lead to a remarkable improvement over the crude distillation processes followed up to this time. The coming centuries saw considerable advancement in distillation techniques and the knowledge of essential oils.

It was during the 20th century that the growing science of aromatic plants was halted by the development of synthetic chemicals and drugs as cheap and economic substitutes, thus the modern medicinal system took its shape and finally engulfed and weakened the system and practice of use of essential oils for medicinal purpose. However, the revival of the use of essential oils is attributed to the French chemist, ‘Rene`-Maurice Gattle fosse’ it was he who coined the term 'aromatherapy' in 1928. The development of aromatherapy during the 20th century is largely the work of three aroma therapists:
Jean Valnet, madam Marguerite Maury and Robert. B. Tisserand. 'The art of aromatherapy written by Tisserand in 1977 is the first book published on the subject in English.

The later part of the 20th century and the dawn of 21st century has witnessed the revival and resurgence of aromatherapy which had lost its popularity to, the scientific revolution engineered, modern medicinal system. Now once again people have started reverting back to the traditional system of aromatherapy mainly because of the short comings and side effects of synthetically produced chemical drugs and their decreasing efficacy and trust among the populace. The call back to nature and natural products without synthetic tampering and adulteration of chemicals, 'aromatherapy' has a very bright future with years to come.

How does Aromatherapy Works
It is not possible here to discuss in details the mode of functioning of the system of aromatherapy, however, a brief extract may be quite indicative of one essential principle on which it works.

The impact of aroma on the mind as a stimulator of mood, and an agent for change of mood, or bringing about the desired mood, is well acknowledged. The smell may work as a potent mode for recalling certain past memories (memories which are desirable) associated with that particular odour. This would immediately transport one into a reliving of that past experience generating at the same time, as a consequence, certain powerful positive mental and emotional states. This process can serve as an energising method bringing in powerful waves of positive currents and at the same time cleansing the present accumulations of negative energy trends present in the mind. Calmness of the mind, soothing and refreshed feeling and sound sleep would be the necessary benefits which would fall upon the practicing individual.
