Acupressure
The Japanese word for acupressure, 'shiatsu' stands for 'shi' - finger and 'atsu' - pressure. It is therefore a medical discipline of restoring the energy balance of the body by applying pressure with the thumb, fingers or other devices on specific body parts which are called acu-points. The device is to energize those parts which have become low energy-level areas. The system seems to have its origin from the ancient Chinese system of self-massage for specific cures. Constant observation and diagnosis inter mingled with the knowledge of energy theory and points evolved the science of acupressure. The merging of the Chinese techniques with those practiced in Japan lead to the final evolution of 'Shiatsu' as a complete medical science. In the beginning of the 20th century these techniques developed further the became more broad-based, blossoming into various individualised forms.

Working of Acupressure
Acupressure works on the principle of releasing energy blockades or congested energy centers from the body by stimulating the various acu-points (energy centers). Stimulation is done by applying pressure from fingers, thumb or other objects to remove the toxic deposits in the muscle tissue. The toxic deposits is the cause for the stiffness in the body, this stiffness, in turn, hampers the functioning of internal body organs by exerting abnormal pressure on nerves and blood vessels and lymph vessels. The acupressure believes in the theory of energy circulation within the body through energy path ways called meridians. A free and unrestricted flow of energy would determine a healthy and sound functioning of the body. Any congestion on the energy path may lead to malfunctioning and disease. With the application of pressure the tenseness of the acu-points is released and normally restored. Acupressure needs a trained specialised and experienced practitioner on the one hand and an active recipient on the other. The patient is required to calm down and concentrate trying to feel the stimulation and consequent subtle changes.
